One day, well-known producer Norman Granz, heading out of Montreal in a taxi on his way to the airport, heard Peterson’s trio on the car radio, live from the jazz club. He was son enchanted with the sound that he demanded the driver turn around and take him to see the musicians. After that, Peterson became a legend. Duke Ellington recognized his talent, calling Peterson the “Maharajah (King) of the Keyboard.”

Still working at a hearty 84, Brubeck performs 80 concerts a year. During his latest concerts, the one piece he’s sure to do is “Take Five” the million-seller penned in 1959 that has come to define Brubeck’s music. “We play it differently every time we play it,” says Brubeck. “So I never get tired of playing it. That’s the beauty of jazz.” He grew up learning classical piano from his mother. He would memorize Bahe and Beethoven to appease her, but jazz was his love. While most players were being influenced by the hard-charging bebop that permeated the scene during the late’40s and 50s, Brubeck’s quartet experimented with syncopated rhythms unusual time signatures and two tone harmonies, Brubeck “probably brought more people into the music than anybody I can think of,” says Dan Morgenstern, director of the institute of Jazz Studies at Rutgers University. “For some reason or other his music connects with people.”

羲之学钟，功夫过之

<img style="FLOAT: left; It has been 18 years since my grandma went to glory. But I still reminisce her anecdotes in my dreams from time to time. I remember all those magic time spent with grandma vividly. She passed away when I was four. Our family’s custom is to lay out our kin at home, where there would be a wake. Our house overflowed with guests and food and talk. Grandma had 2 daughters and 5 sons, with my father youngest one. As a little boy, I just thought grandma was sleeping over there. So I just chasing around with my elder sister, eating and getting praised by relatives. Then, there was the moment my sister taught me how to take the garden hose and do it in such a way so it would spray into the sun and make a rainbow. First, I thought it was fun, and kept doing that, but after a while, through the mist, I could see my grandma, she was standing over there, smiling at me. And I held there for a long time and looked at her……., and then, finally, I let go of the hose, and she disappeared.

Then I went back to the house, and pulled my father into a small room, where grandma had once done needlework.
I whispered, “Dad, the one lying over there is not grandma ”
“What do you mean?”
“It isn’t,” I said.” She is not in there”
“Then where is she?” My father asked
“Somewhere in the rainbow, smiling at me”
“Why do you think that?” Father knelt down and put his hand on my forehead.
“I just know, I saw her, I just know. That’s all”

Father took a deep breath and seated me down and told me if people died, I would never saw them again, and I was just imagining it.
I guess, the concept of death was just too large for me to understand then. But I knew what I saw, I was just glad to see, I mean I’ve never seen that since. Now, I just know how ambiguous everything is in the world, even death. I don’t believe in the reincarnation thing, but I believe in something inside----even though I can’t prove it----that was called faith and that helped me understand many things in my life.

Keep Dreaming

The people who get on in this world are the people who get up and look for the circumstances they want, and if they can't find them, make them----------George Bernad Shaw

I always consider myself a big dreamer, a visionary. This attainment is made possible through passionate concern for choice, in an atmosphere of social trust

As a medical professional, I have a profound understanding the significance of maintaining unity while honoring diversity. Through combination of TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) and western medicine, many revolutionary therapies have been developed. Take acute pancreatitis for instance, which is an acute self-digestion of pancreas, due to the abnormal release of pancreatic enzymes. The triggers are usually ethanol abuse, Gallstones, and abdominal trauma. Auto digestion of pancreas cause series of systemic complications, like Renal failure, acute respiratory distress syndrome, GI bleeding and septic shock(septicemia). The conventional western medicine therapies mostly include supportive treatment and surgery, with the mortality rate of 50%, which is in just the big urban areas. We have no idea how many might die in all those rural areas. But after1990s, when doctors tap TCM into the pancreatitis treatment, with its balanced approach to adjust the whole system, the mortality rate has plummeted by more than 40%, now, in our hospital, with the average of 5.2%, we top the national records in the treating of pancreatitis, Thanks to the combination of TCM and western medicine, many lives were saved.

We live in a world filled with a wondrous diversity of experiences, opinions, physical appearance, cultures, religion, etc. One of the challenges of this age is not only to find a way to live in harmony with people, who differ from us, but to celebrate the diversity and learn from it. We can only learn a limited amount from those who are like us but there is a fortune of new knowledge to be gained from those who have a different perspective to our own.

The One Is the Many, the Many Are the One

---------------My insight in intercultral communication

Diversity is the one true thing we all have in common. Celebrate it every day. If we cannot end now our differences, at least we can help make the world safe for diversity.

At the bottom every man knows well enough that he is a unique human being, only once on this earth; and by no extraordinary chance will such a marvelously picturesque piece of diversity in unity as he is, ever be put together a second time.

Here is a personal story which might illustrate my point clearly. Back three years ago, I was assigned to be a interpreter for a Russian couple, Nicolay and his lovely wife Natasha, who were working as ophthalmologic doctors in our hospital. Well, don’t get it wrong, they spoke English. At the end of the exchange programme, we end up to be very close friends, so I was invited to their apartment for a departing dinner. At the end of a wonderful meal Natasha asked if I would like a banana. I politely declined and thanked her, and explained I was most satisfied with the meal. But the whole while my mind was racing: "What do I do? Do I offer her a banana even though they are as close to her as they are to me? What is the polite thing to do?"
"Would you like a banana?" I asked Natasha.
"Yes," she smiled, but made no attempt to take any of the three bananas in the fruit basket. "What now?" I thought.
"Which one would you like?" I fumbled.
"That one," she pointed at one of the bananas. So all the while thinking about Russian politeness I picked the banana Natasha had pointed at and peeled it half way and handed it to her. Smiles in Natasha and Nicolay's faces told me I had done the right thing. After this experience I was proud of myself, and try to let my other friends know that in Russia, the polite thing is to peel the bananas for the ladies.
"Oh no, Lance," another Russian friend later graciously corrected me. "In Russia, when a man peels a banana for a lady it means he has a romantic interest in her.” well, you can imagine, I was shocked, how embarrassed I felt.
Thank god, later, the couple accepted my apology, but I learned that certain lessons have to be learned the hard way.

Differences between people within any given nation or culture are much greater than differences between groups. Education, social standing, religion, personality, belief structure, past experience, affection shown in the home, and a myriad of other factors will affect human behavior and culture. But are we really that different, or may be not, I would like to talk about this tomorrow.

Never Say Quit, You Can Be A Champion

<img style="FLOAT: right; Eisenhower

Tomorrow, I am gonna give a speech about Unity and Diversity, which is a very big and tough topic, in the process of preparing the script, I have read many materials about politics, economy, culture, philosophy and ideology. When I was collecting info about the Irap War,which is basically worsened by the intolerance between Sunnis and Shiites. In fact, The current condition greatly resembles the situation in the Post-World One Irap. Back then the British were handed Mesopotamia as a world war I spoil. And they ran into the same mess which are facing by the US now. While the US politician are wondering how to dealing with the problem. A senior British diplomat long ago figured out what has become one of the enduring dilemmas of Iraq: The presence of a foreign army can undermine efforts to establish a new government.Gertrude Bell, first British diplomat to Iraq, wrote that 85 years ago, she arrived in 1920 and discovered Iraq was split deeply along religious and ethnic lines, although in roles reversed from today's. The Sunnis then tried to keep the Shiites out the government, by doing nothing to conciliate the Shiahs.Sunnis today have accused the Shiites of doing the same thing to them. Under pressure from the British, the Sunnis put Shiites in a handful of nominal positions and a fragile government was seated.Today, the same thing are going on in Iraq, and there is no way the democracy can work out without the coorperation of the parties, they must pursue unity whiling maintaining diversity to generate a New Iraq.

Reverse Living-----some random thoughts

When attention is without limit, it is Divine Consciousness Itself. I laughed at some of the antics, I cried at the sad parts, and most of all I was glued to the screen for the whole film! It takes a lot to keep my attention, as I normally potter around the classroom, when there is a Movie on (We watched movies on the TV installed in our classroom), but for this film, I sat for the duration and could not take my eyes off the screen. I did not want to miss anything. I have now had this DVD for quite a while now and it has been watched many times and it never loses its appeal.Braveheart is history the way it should be told, full of romance and treachery and battle and passion and Mel Gibson in a kilt. The story of William Wallace, the 13th-century Scottish national hero, is obviously something Gibson, Braveheart's director and star, feels strongly about -- this is an extraordinary film about a people always oppressed and still not truly free, handled with graphic realism and heartbreaking sensitivity.

BRAVEHEART is set in Scotland in the 1200s. It tells the true story of William Wallace who was a famous commoner who led his people in a rebellion against the English. The movie is of epic proportions, length and grandeur. The audience can learn the entire history of William Wallace from the age of 8 until his death。

Within plenty of praiseworthy features, personally,I love the legendary romance between William Wallace and Princess Isabelle(played by breathtaking Sophie Marceau). They fell in live at the first sight, The film implies she is pregnant at the time of Wallace's execution, possibly carrying the future Edward III of England, which is really amazing.

This movie has some great action scenes, and with this track, rear channels and surrounds are used to full force. Sword swinging, screaming, slashes, it's all here and sounds well. Dialogue is remarkably clear and easy to understand, and the track sounds really good with James Horner's score. The cinematography makes one feel the beauty and the isolation of countryside. The music with the recurring and haunting melody of the lone Scottish bagpipe sets a sad and yet serene tone and mood.

As a must-see movie for any man, I have been greatly inspired by it for many years. Having been reading The Importance of Living, one of Lin Yu tang's masterpieces, for 4 years, I was always pondering this question:Who am I? After all these years of meditation, I figured out that it is the puzzling question which is almost impossible to answer. But I am pretty sure that the busy self occupied in my daily activities is not quite the real self. I am quite sure I have lost something in the mere pursuit of living. When one group of people watch a person running about looking for something in a field, the wise man sets a puzzle for all the spectators to solve: what has that person lost? Someone thinks it is a watch; another thinks it is a diamond brooch;and others will essay other guesses. After all these guesses have failed, the wiseman who really doesn't know what the person is seeking after tells the company: "I'll tell you. He has lost some breath. " And no one can deny that he is right. So we often forget our trueself in the pursuit of living, like a bird forgetting its own danger in pursuit of a mantis, which again forgets its own danger in pursuit of another prey.
Thus,who am I? I guess, I am me.
In all the world, there is no one else exactly like me. There are people who have some parts like me but no one adds up exactly like me. Therefore, everything that comes out of me is authentically mine because I alone choose it.
I own everything about me- my body, including everything it does; my mind, including all my thoughts and ideas; my eyes, including the images of all they behold; my feelings, whatever they might be -- anger, joy, frustration, love, disappointment, excitement; my mouth and all the words that come out of it -- polite, sweet and rough, correct or incorrect; my voice, loud and soft; all my actions, whether they be to others or myself.
I own my fantasies, my dreams, my hopes, my fears. I own my triumphs and successes, and all my failures and mistakes.
Because I own all of me, when I review later how I looked and sounded, what I said and did, and how I thought and felt, some parts may turn out to be unfitting, and keep that which proved fitting, and invent something new for that which I discarded.
I can see, hear, feel, think, say and do. I have the tools to survive, to be close to others, to be productive, to make sense and order out of the world of people and things outside of me.
I own me and therefore I can engineer me.

God's Very Special Child

A baby is God's opinion that the world should go on
When flipping through today's newspaper,a story caught my eye. It is about the current hot shots,Li Ya Peng, Wang Fei and their harelipped daughter. What really impresses me is their attitudes towards their cleft-palated child, after this issue was known by the public. They didn't grieve because their daughter wasn't perfect, instead, they accept and cherish the child for the very speicial being she is and they will always be,i hope.
On Ya Peng's blog, he expressed tremendous gratitude to the kind folks and god. Started early June, the project has gotten ten students involved, half Nepalese, half Chinese. It is my creation to launch this eye-opening project. Since 2001, the population of intentional students has been skyrocketing, which poses an ideal evironment for oversea and domestic students communication. I began to wonder about ways to broaden both Nepalese and Chinese students understanding of each other's cultures, not only by handing them textbooks.
"what would happen,"I thought in my mind,"if students are able to meet on a platform what allowed an equal exchange? What if they could learn with and from each other, not just about each other?"
the platforms are the Word Wide Web(Chinese Club website), and the associated activities like Co-practice in the hospital, Culture travel programme, etc.
it is my expectation that students can overcome the language hurdles in those programmes and benefit from each other. Working with Chinese students in the hospital, intelnational students are able to communicate with the patients and teacher, and read the history, which are crucial for their internship. Likewise, Chinese students in this programme get a chance to build up a stronger foundation for medial career, as well as improve English skills.
Hopefully, in the future, I can convince more students to take part in these exchange project and make a difference.

A Fraction of Life Wisdom

<img style="FLOAT: right; Every time I went the the English Corner, there were always a group of people around, asking me about that competition, which made me sick in some ways. I knew this was totally irrational, after all, I was put on TV, watched by people around this nation, and granted with publicity and fame. But deep down in my heart, there was a strong sense of underachievement. Life was just about perfect, I told myself, feeling immensely resentful that fate had been so cruel to me,when I was kicked out in the national final round. Failing to be entitled national champion posed a horrible shadow in my mind.
The feeling of guilty and inferiority dragged on, and the paralysis in my work grew worse. The redemption time came when one of my friends asked me"what do you learn from this competition? What are your motives of taking part in it?". My first reaction was purely defensive. This competition totally sucks and there is nothing wrong with my motives, I want to be successfu-who doesn't? I wanna continue the champion title which I won in Sichuan. He was speechless then. But, later, said a small voice somewhere in my head, maybe those motives aren't good enough, and that's why the wheels have stopped going around. In retrospect, I did learn a lot from the competition, which should be the biggest reward I've ever gotten. Bearing this thought,I began to reexam the whole process. Indeed, I didn't leave Beijing empty handed. It is the overcoming of fear that has the most profound impact on me.
I have shown great courage in the whole journey. Courage is resistance of fear, mastery of fear-not absence of fear. In fact, onstage I found myself unable to concentrate on the lines, I hesitated and stammered, for an instant, as panic mounted in me, I was even tempted to turn and run away. But there is one echo in my ear:Don't be afraid to be afraid. Each word I spoke on the stage was anguish. But finally I conquered fear;I had simply admitted it and gone on despite it.

My Medical Journey

<img style="FLOAT: left;
